Tinnitus treatment depends entirely on the type of tinnitus. Vascular tinnitus is treatable and reversible. Here is how I decided what I have, what to do about it, and the results so far.

Tinnitus Treatment Strategies

Recently I reported on my newly developing tinnitus and the research that I found out about how to treat it. This is the post that offers the list of treatments that I found and what you can expect from them: Ringing In Ears Goes Away.

It is important to be clear about what type of tinnitus you have. Wikipedia offers descriptions for two main types of tinnitus: 1) Objective or vascular tinnitus (see below); and, 2) subjective tinnitus (noise-induced damage, also associated with hearing loss).

This what I am interested in and here is why…

Focusing on Vascular Tinnitus

The reason that I decided that my symptoms indicate vascular tinnitus, and not noise-induced damage, are several:

I am careful to protect my hearing against noise damage

I have a vascular flow problem already, showing up as swollen ankles

The buzz level diminishes overnight, after I have been prone for a few hours

The buzz level is at its lowest in mornings after I have taken 125 mg of magnesium just before bedtime the night before

The most likely source of noise-induced damage for me would have been shooting guns, which I have done for many years. However, damage would have been mainly to one ear, showing up primarily as hearing loss. This is what other hunting buddies of mine have experienced.

My general vascular flow problem is what I call the ‘long-distance flight syndrome’ or something like that. It is well-known in travelers who sit nearly immobile in an airplane seat for a few hours at a time. This is what happens to me when I sit for long periods at my desk.

CONCLUSION: I have vascular tinnitus, not noise-related damage. This is good news, since the latter damage is permanent – i.e., irreversible.

This just means that I can experiment with any and all of the tinnitus treatment options that I summarized in the previous post that I linked to above. All of these options are easily accessible and cost-effective.

My favorite one is Ginkgo biloba, only because I have some research experience with this herb and I have done extensive literature review of the 1,000-plus research articles on it. Contrary to popular belief and marketing hype, it is not well-supported as a memory enhancer. However, it is effective against two condittions: 1) vascular tinnitus (aha!); and, 2) intermittent claudication (aha again!). The latter is pain caused by a vascular problem in the lower legs. Hmm. Sound familiar? The flavonoids and terpenoids in Ginkgo are well-known to help with strengthening capillary and vein walls, thereby aiding vascular flow.

Current Strategy

I have been supplementing with 20 mg of melatonin nightly for several years, so I have that one covered. I now take a time-released form of magnesium, 500 mg per day in 4 separate doses (to avoid the laxative effect), with double the amount of calcium to balance the two together. I have upped my B-vitamins and at least once a day take B-12, 5000 mcg sublingually (which is more than 80,000 percent of the RDA, meaning that the government-defined recommendation is pathetically inadequate). I’ve just restarted taking 50 mg of zinc per day, which I had stopped a while ago when I forgot to reorder it.

The Ginkgo biloba supplement that I take is an extract that is standardized to 24 percent ginkgoflavones (flavonoids) and 6 percent ginkgolides (terpenes), which is the typical requirement in clinical research. No other kinds of Ginkgo supplements measure up, so don’t bother with them if you are going to take this herb. Oh, and be sure to take 240 mg per day.

Beware of Vasoconstrictors

Anything that causes vascular constriction is more than likely to be a negative impact on vascular tinnitus. How much, nobody knows. The two biggies are nicotine and caffeine. I have cut down my coffee intake to one cup, down from six or more, per day. Decaffenated coffee has to satisfy my habit after that.

Nicotine has never been part of my lifestyle, so I have no worries there. Nicotine, by the way, is the most powerful vasoconstrictor you can imagine. I saw video once that showed the veins in a patient’s hand becoming noticeably constricted only 10 minutes after taking a puff on a cigarette.

Next Steps

It will take a few weeks to know whether my multi-pronged approach is helping. At some point, if I am not seeing the results that I want, I will add hydergine and vinpocetine to my tinnitus treatment program. These are the final two herbal ingredients in the list that I posted at Ringing In Ears Goes Away.

If it comes to that, I will also up my B-complex and B-12 intake by converting to injectable forms, since that would be even more effective than the oral B-complex and the sublingual B-12 that I am taking now.

I will post my progress as I see new results over the next few weeks and months, so stay tuned here (or be sure to subscribe to my newsletter by requesting my free supplements report here: Complete Nutrition).

Note About Subjective Tinnitus

Although I am not personally concerned with this type of tinnitus, let me call to your attention the comment on treating this type with melatonin, as described in my previous post.

Updating my tinnitus treatment progress,

Dr. D

The syndrome of ringing in ears is commonly believed to be caused by irreversible physical damage to the ears. Fortunately, this isn’t always the case. Mine went away. Here is why.

.
.
.

Ringing in the Ears – Tinnitus?

First off, it isn’t really ringing. If you know what I’m talking about, maybe you would agree that it sounds more like a hatch of cicadas buzzing outside your front door. Only it happens without interruption, 24 hours per day, in the absence of cicadas.

Low level buzzing is more like it.

The medical term that covers a wide variety of problems like this is ‘tinnitus’. According to the definition of tinnitus on Wikipedia, “Tinnitus (from the Latin word tinnitus meaning “ringing”) is the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound.”

Furthermore:

Tinnitus and hearing loss can be permanent conditions. If a ringing in the ears is audible following lengthy exposure to a source of loud noise, such as a music concert or an industrial workplace, it means lasting damage may have already occurred.

I am not sure why hearing loss was thrown in there, except maybe because it is also associated with ear damage.

Tinnitus Treatment

I’d like to say that the tinnitus entry on Wikipedia was helpful with some good advice about treatment. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Oh, there is a long list of treatments alright. Most seem toxic, or like medieval torture. Not one recommendation included a natural approach.

Being a natural health type myself, I knew there was more to the story. In fact, many years ago I was studying Ginkgo biloba and discovered a number of published research studies on its use in treating tinnitus.

The Wikipedia information is clearly an entry by someone in mainstream medicine. For comparison, I found this entry on natural approaches to tinnitus treatment at the Life Extension Foundation, here: Tinnitus at Life Extension Foundation.

My Success

I noticed a buzzing in my ears when I went to bed 5 nights ago. When I woke up it was still there. That is when I started analyzing my condition from a perspective of potential causality, thereby laying the groundwork for finding a treatment to reverse it.

After considering my diet, supplement program, workout regimen, sleeping patterns, exposure to damaging noise levels, etc., etc., I decided that I did not acquire tinnitus from physical damage. When considering all the nutritional approaches that I could experiment with, supplementing with magnesium seemed to be the best approach to start with.

It only took two nights to get the buzzing down to nearly zero, after taking extra magnesium during the day. The first day I took only 125 mg, keeping the amount low to avoid the laxative effect. The second day, yesterday, I took 125 mg in the morning and 250 mg before bed. Most of the buzzing was gone by this morning. It has picked up again this afternoon, although it has not returned to the previous level.

Magnesium is clearly the main part of my successful treatment. I will continue to take it, at least 500 mg per day over 4 doses, to see how long it takes to get rid of ALL the buzzing ALL the time.

I am relieved to have found an easy fix. I also discovered that I am either deficient in magnesium, which is highly likely, or that I developed a symptom of excess vitamin D supplementation (5000 IU) in combination with low magnesium. These two go hand in hand.

By the way, I take a magnesium product that provides slow release, to counteract the laxative effect. So far so good! The product is called Jigsaw Health Magnesium w/SRT.

All the best with ringing in ears syndrome,

Dr. Oz offers an overwhelming amount of advice on his TV show and in numerous articles in popular magazines. Unfortunately, some of his advice is inconsistent and confusing. Here are some examples regarding vitamins.

Dr. Oz Advice on Vitamins

Among the myriad recommendations that you want to know about vitamins are the answers to two questions:

Which vitamins should you take?

How much of each one?

Dr. Oz is a wonderful medical doctor who knows the value of supplements. His TV shows, his website, and his published articles focus on the benefits that we can get from them

In a quick search on his website, and in a couple of articles in our local newspaper, he gives conflicting advice on how much of each vitamin that we should take as supplements every day. In some cases he recommends target amounts that are well above the governmental RDAs. One a couple of occasions he simply states that multivitamin supplements should offer 100 percent of the RDA of each vitamin.

This should not be rocket science. There are only 13 vitamins, and we have a pretty good idea of recommended amounts to take based on continuing research.

That is why it was such a puzzle to see Dr. Oz recommend the RDA of vitamin C (60 mg), which is notoriously low. According to one of my university colleagues, who is a research specialist on vitamin C, the RDA of this vitamin was an arbitrary determination by a committee. That means it was a guess.

The daily intake of vitamin C should very clearly be 10-20 times the RDA. Indeed, my colleague takes 1,000 mg per day. That is closer to the minimum that everyone should take. Dr. Oz sometimes recommends this amount, and sometimes he doesn’t. Pretty confusing.

This doesn’t even consider the value of upping vitamin C intake by several thousand milligrams for preventing and reversing clinical conditions. The most famous ‘Dr. Vitamin C’ of all time in this regard was Linus Pauling, who recommended at least 2,000 mg per day, up to 10,000 to 20,000 mg per day depending on clinical conditions. (See Vitamin C at the Linus Pauling Institute.)

The other noted vitamin that is becoming more important as a supplement is vitamin D. The RDA of this vitamin was increased in 2010 as follows: for those 1-70 years of age, 600 IU daily; for those 71 years and older, 800 IU daily; and for pregnant and lactating women, 600 IU daily.

At least one printed article by Dr. Oz (if he actually writes them) referred to an older RDA at a much lower level. On his website and on his TV show he talks about the importance of a 2,000 IU daily dose. The latter recommendation is closer to reality based on recent research. However, even that level may be inadequate for those who are vitamin D deficient or who can benefit from a treatment effect for cancer. Doses may be better at 3,000 to 4,000 IU, or even in some cases as high as 10,000 IU.

The Main Point…

It is the same one as always: Do your research to get the lay of the land, so to speak, on who is recommendation how much of what vitamins and why. The ‘and why’ part is important, since so many doctors, nutritionists, and other health practitioners apparently parrot the party line without much thought or evidence to support their advice.

And if you can get tested for certain vitamins, such as vitamin D, use that as a guideline for how much you should take every day.

Loving Dr. Oz, sort of,

Dr. D

The following is an abstract from a recently published research article. Take a quick look at it, then skip down to my explanation of what this means for your health.

The Abstract

Protective effect of sulforaphane against oxidative stress: Recent advances.

Guerrero-Beltrán CE, Calderón-Oliver M, Pedraza-Chaverri J, Chirino YI.

Departamento de Biología, Facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 04510 México, DF, Mexico.
Abstract

Sulforaphane [1-isothiocyanate-(4R)-(methylsulfinyl)butane] is a natural dietary isothiocyanate produced by the enzymatic action of the myrosinase on glucopharanin, a 4-methylsulfinylbutyl glucosinolate contained in cruciferous vegetables of the genus Brassica such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage. Studies on this compound is increasing because its anticarcinogenic and cytoprotective properties in several in vivo experimental paradigms associated with oxidative stress such as focal cerebral ischemia, brain inflammation, intracerebral hemorrhage, ischemia and reperfusion induced acute renal failure, cisplatin induced-nephrotoxicity, streptozotocin-induced diabetes, carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity and cardiac ischemia and reperfusion. This protective effect also has been observed in in vitro studies in different cell lines such as human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y, renal epithelial proximal tubule LLC-PK1 cells and aortic smooth muscle A10 cells. Sulforaphane is considered an indirect antioxidant; this compound is able to induce many cytoprotective proteins, including antioxidant enzymes, through the Nrf2-antioxidant response element pathway. Heme oxygenase-1, NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase, glutathione-S-transferase, gamma-glutamyl cysteine ligase, and glutathione reductase are among the cytoprotective proteins induced by sulforaphane. In conclusion, sulforaphane is a promising antioxidant agent that is effective to attenuate oxidative stress and tissue/cell damage in different in vivo and in vitro experimental paradigms.

PMID: 21129940 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Translation into English

The key point here is the list of effects of sulforaphane against several inflammatory problems. Sulforaphane is generated from broccoli and similar vegetables (best in broccoli, though) by a biochemical reaction involving a certain type of enzyme.

Unfortunately, this reaction does not occur very efficiently when you eat broccoli. In fact, it is most inefficient when you eat raw broccoli. On the other hand, the enzyme is destroyed by overcooking. Steamed broccoli would provide the best source of sulforaphane from whole broccoli, although this still falls short of what you can get from a properly extracted sulforaphane fraction in a good nutritional supplement.

Not too long ago I attended a seminar about a new product from Thorne Research, which is one of the absolutely best companies in the entire nutritional supplement industry. They have been researching broccoli for quite a while and have just come out with a new product called Crucera-SGS that offers the best way to get the right ingredients from broccoli into your supplement program. I was so impressed that I now take this supplement every day. It sure beats eating several pounds of broccoli to get the same benefits!

Thorne Research focuses on formulas for health professionals, so the new Crucera-SGS will probably not be widely available in everyday nutrition stores. Nevertheless, online stores are starting to offer it, so it should be easy to get it. I highly recommend it.

All the best for broccoli benefits,

From what to do when you feel a hot flash coming on to an herbal remedy for instant stress relief, Stewart’s tip sheet is filled with great ideas for managing menopausal symptoms quickly and easily to free yourself to enjoy the holidays.

“Hot flashes, night sweats, tense moments, mood swings and low self esteem are hardly conducive to cheerfulness,” says Stewart, who has advised over a million women worldwide about how to successfully manage menopause. “These tips will help women control the physical symptoms of menopause and recognize the special importance of taking care of yourself during the holidays. And the advice is good year-round.”

The report Keeping Your Cool During the Holiday Season is available free at Maryon Stewart’s blog site, www.naturalmenopause.com. In addition four guest patients join Maryon in a 35 minute audio Lifebay show exchanging advice and tips on how to cope with the holidays. The women speak frankly about how they have dealt with their menopause symptoms and maintained their cool and a sense of joy in the holidays.

The report is based on The Natural Menopause Program. The kit includes a DVD and an extensive manual that helps women manage menopause and thrive in the second half of their lives. With so many women deciding against HRT (hormone replacement therapy,) Stewart’s natural menopause program, which has been successfully helping women for over 20 years, provides solutions to the symptoms caused by hormonal changes: hot flashes, night sweats, sleeplessness, low libido, vaginal dryness, lack of energy, memory loss and mood swings. It also suggests ways for women to wean themselves from HRT. Then the program provides advice for women to stay healthy and energetic for the rest of their lives.

Maryon Stewart is an advocate of managing menopause naturally, through nutrition, scientifically based supplements, exercise and relaxation. For many years she has been a nutritional researcher and counselor and a recognized expert on nutrition and fitness. In 1987 she launched the Women’s Nutritional Advisory Service for women of all ages. Now she’s bringing her wisdom and services to North America for the very first time.

Says Stewart “There is simply no reason women need to suffer their symptoms through the holidays or ever. Simple proven remedies are available at their fingertips. I hope all menopausal women will take back their lives this holiday season.”

And what is her simple remedy for stress? Delegate, take short cuts, regularly exercise to good music and add one-quarter teaspoon nutmeg to one cup of warm water, and sip it slowly while taking a few deep breaths.

About Maryon Stewart

Maryon Stewart is the author of 24 best-selling self-help books in the UK including The Phyto Factor, Cruising through the Menopause, Beat Menopause Naturally and No More PMS. Pharmaceutical companies at the moment are winning the battle.
The new kids on the block are the herbal enhancement product companies who believe that herbs will eventually take over the fields of sexual enhancement and sexual dysfunction. This is simply because they have no side effects and the majority of the population can take them.

But let’s be honest. There is quite a bit to be concerned about safety even in the field of herbal products. Many herbal companies take advantage of the fact that there’s very little FDA regulation on herbs. The same chemicals that are in pharmaceutical products have often been found in herbal products.

With companies like Bayer, Eli Lilly, and Pfizer on the playing field, the herbal companies have a long way to catch up. But it appears that their products have an advantage over the pharmaceuticals drugs. Herbs work for more than 90% of the people who use them and rarely cause more than a slight headache or nasal congestion as a side effect.

Hopefully herbal products will soon be the norm in the United States just as it is in many European countries. Only time will tell for sure and chances are the big companies will probably just buy out the herbal companies or create their own.

Now my local supermarket even provides them if folks feel the need to wipe their hands after touching the handle of those filthy shopping carts. This is silliness taken to the extreme.
Think hand sanitizers protect you against germs? Think again

(NaturalNews) Worried about catching a cold or the flu? Just slather on some hand sanitizer and you will be fine, say experts. But a new report has some different things to say. According to “germ experts”, alcohol-based hand sanitizers only kill certain germs for up to two minutes before drying up and becoming useless. And a recent study out of the University of Virginia (UV) revealed that alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not reduce the overall number of cold and flu cases, either, suggesting they are ineffective.

My Research on Hand Sanitizers

A few years ago I set up an experiment to compare the antibacterial activity of hand sanitizers with that of various antibiotics. All I can say is that the results were all over the map. Some products had no activity. Some exceeded the antibiotic effect of the antibiotic drugs. Wow!

All the best in natural health,

Herbs for thyroid deficiency have little or no scientific support. The good news is that certain minerals and supplements are well-known for restoring thyroid function and boosting metabolism. Combining the right supplements with additional natural approaches is a surefire way to boost low thyroid.
As a botanist, I am often asked about my recommendations for herbs for thyroid deficiency. Unfortunately, I am chagrined to say that there is no straightforward list of herbs for this purpose. The medical database, PubMed, lists no publications on this topic, except for a couple of inconclusive reviews of a few herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. None of my herbal reference manuals offers recommendations. In spite of that background, the Internet seems to be replete with articles and advice about herbs for thyroid conditions, none of which enjoy solid scientific support.

Thyroid Deficiency is Complicated

Part of the overall problem is that thyroid deficiency is a multifaceted problem, which therefore requires a multifaceted treatment approach. One of the best such approaches is offered by Mark A. Hyman, M.D., at his blog here:

A 7-step Plan to Boost Your Low Thyroid and Metabolism

As Dr. Hyman says, I believe a comprehensive approach is needed to address chronic thyroid issues and to diagnose them. Unfortunately, most of the options for healing by conventional care are quite limited and only provide a partial solution. But by following my seven-step plan you can achieve optimal health and UltraWellness.

I encourage you to click on that link and see the rest of his commentary and advice.

Iodine – The Missing Mineral

Iodine is a key mineral in the function not only of your thyroid but also ever cell in your body. When the thyroid doesn’t get enough iodine, it further depletes the amount of this mineral for other cells.

Some surprising and crucial facts about iodine that you should be aware of are:

* 95% of Americans are deficient in iodine. This probably includes you.
* Every cell in your body needs iodine to function properly.
* Different organs of your body use either elemental iodine or ionic iodine (iodide).
* Kelp provides only the iodide form.
* The federally defined Daily Value for iodine is pathetically low.
* It is almost impossible to get sufficient iodine from food.

Iodine deficiency leads to hypothyroidism, which is almost always inappropriately treated with prescription thyroid drugs. In addition to weight gain, other symptoms of hypothyroidism include a bad complexion, fatigue, forgetfulness, loss of sex drive, impotence, irritability and unhealthy hair, nails and teeth. An underactive thyroid gland promotes excess weight and cellulite by causing water retention. Dr. David Brownstein, in his book, Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It (3rd Edition) (see Amazon), also attributes breast cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, and prostate cysts and prostate cancer to iodine deficiency. Dr. Brownstein is one of the nation’s leading holistic thyroid practitioners.

Fortunately, you can help normalize an underactive thyroid gland by increasing your intake of the mineral iodine. It is absolutely crucial to work with a knowledgeable healthcare practitioner who knows how to test for and reverse iodine deficiency, not just a doctor who will thoughtlessly prescribe drugs.

Acccording to Dr. Brownstein, Iodoral is the best iodine supplement that I have found, because it provides both forms of iodine in sufficient amounts to be useful for your whole body.

For truth about herbs for thyroid deficiency,
